| BL99021 British Railways Flying Scotsman A3 in Brass The Flying Scotsman was the first new locomotive to be completed by the newly formed London & North Eastern Railway in 1923 and is undoubtedly one of the most famous and elegant 20th century locomotives in the world. Although the name Flying Scotsman was not officially bestowed on the 10 oclock express from Kings Cross to Edinburgh until 1927, this train had been thus known for many years, certainly long before the locomotive appeared on the scene in 1923.
The Flying Scotsman has achieved many firsts throughout its career, including when it hit the headlines in 1934 during the course of a high speed trial between London and Leeds, when a fully authenticated 100mph was recorded for the first time.
